Public Advisory: Polar Bear Warning Issued for Black Tickle

The Department of Natural Resources is warning the public about a sighting of a polar bear in the community of Black Tickle.

A resident of the area reported the sighting to conservation officers with the department. The resident said he was approached by the polar bear early Monday near his home. The department believes the polar bear was wounded and last seen on Spotted Island, which is uninhabited and not reachable by boat or snowmobile at this time of the year.

Conservation officers are presently conducting regular patrols in and around Black Tickle and an investigation is ongoing. The department encourages people in the area to properly store garbage and requests dog team owners to not store seal carcasses near areas usually frequented by the public to help reduce the potential for a confrontation with the bears. If anyone encounters a polar bear, they should:

  • Remain calm
  • Give the bear(s) space
  • Back away, get out of the situation, never run
  • If you must speak, do so calmly and firmly
  • Avoid direct eye contact with the bear(s)
  • Anyone sighting polar bears is asked to please contact the Happy ValleyGoose Bay Forest Management Office at 709-896-3405.
