St. Georges-Stephenville East to Receive $242,200 in
Municipal Capital Works Funding

A municipal capital works investment of approximately $242,200 will support infrastructure projects to improve water services for residents of Stephenville and Bay St. George South. The Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Municipal Affairs (Acting), was joined by the Honourable Joan Burke, MHA for the District of St. Georges-Stephenville East in Bay St. George this morning to make the announcement.

Our government is committed to supporting the modernization of municipal infrastructure and ensuring that communities have access to safe, modern water services, said Minister Hedderson. Water services are a critical component of healthy, vibrant communities and an essential part of our everyday lives. The infrastructure work in Stephenville and Bay St. George will support efforts to ensure that reliable, efficient services are in place for residents.

Infrastructure projects supported through municipal capital works funding include:

  • $92,200 to support work to correct inefficiencies and secure water/sewer infrastucture at the sewage treatment plant in Stephenville. Work on this project has been completed.

  • $150,000 to support a highlands well system to provide a reliable supply of potable drinking water to the Local Service District of Bay St. George South. Work has commenced and is expected to be completed in December.

I am pleased with this recent investment in water and sewer municipal infrastructure for Bay St. George South and Stephenville, said the Honourable Joan Burke, MHA for the District of St. Georges-Stephenville East. Improvements to these water delivery systems will ensure that residents of the Bay St. George area have safe, efficient water systems.

In Budget 2009: Building on Our Strong Foundation, the Provincial Government made an unprecedented multi-year commitment of a 69 per cent increase in municipal capital works funding for fiscal years 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11. This commitment increased the capital budget by $34.4 million annually, bringing the total annual Provincial Government commitment to $84.3 million.

The Provincial Government's infrastructure strategy is valued at more than $4 billion over the next several years. Provincial infrastructure projects totaling $1.6 billion will be tendered this fiscal year, creating an estimated 15,000 jobs (some seasonal) and providing significant economic stimulus to the economy of Newfoundland and Labrador.
