St.
Georges-Stephenville East to Receive $242,200 in
Municipal Capital Works Funding
A municipal capital works
investment of approximately $242,200 will support
infrastructure projects to improve water services for
residents of Stephenville and Bay St. George South. The
Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Municipal Affairs
(Acting), was joined by the Honourable Joan Burke, MHA
for the District of St. George�s-Stephenville East in
Bay St. George this morning to make the announcement.
�Our government is
committed to supporting the modernization of municipal
infrastructure and ensuring that communities have access
to safe, modern water services,� said Minister Hedderson.
�Water services are a critical component of healthy,
vibrant communities and an essential part of our
everyday lives. The infrastructure work in Stephenville
and Bay St. George will support efforts to ensure that
reliable, efficient services are in place for
residents.�
Infrastructure projects
supported through municipal capital works funding
include:
- $92,200 to support
work to correct inefficiencies and secure
water/sewer infrastucture at the sewage treatment
plant in Stephenville. Work on this project has been
completed.
- $150,000 to support
a highlands well system to provide a reliable supply
of potable drinking water to the Local Service
District of Bay St. George South. Work has commenced
and is expected to be completed in December.

recent investment in water and sewer municipal
infrastructure for Bay St. George South and
Stephenville,� said the Honourable Joan Burke, MHA for
the District of St. George�s-Stephenville East.
�Improvements to these water delivery systems will
ensure that residents of the Bay St. George area have
safe, efficient water systems.�
In Budget 2009:
Building on Our Strong Foundation, the Provincial
Government made an unprecedented multi-year commitment
of a 69 per cent increase in municipal capital works
funding for fiscal years 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11.
This commitment increased the capital budget by $34.4
million annually, bringing the total annual Provincial
Government commitment to $84.3 million.
The Provincial
Government's infrastructure strategy is valued at more
than $4 billion over the next several years. Provincial
infrastructure projects totaling $1.6 billion will be
tendered this fiscal year, creating an estimated 15,000
jobs (some seasonal) and providing significant economic
stimulus to the economy of Newfoundland and Labrador.
