Minister Recognizes Municipal Election Candidates

Municipal elections were held in 137 municipalities in Newfoundland and Labrador on September 29 to elect councils which will work to strengthen municipal services, and contribute to the development of strong, vibrant communities across the province.

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the approximately 2,000 candidates who put their names on the ballot for consideration to be elected to municipal council, and recognize those who have been elected in the 2009 municipal elections, said the Honourable Dianne Whalen, Minister of Municipal Affairs. Municipal government impacts our everyday lives, and councillors put considerable time and effort into strengthening municipal services, and improving our communities. All candidates should be commended for their leadership, commitment, and interest in working to secure our communities for future generations.

Of the 266 municipalities that were eligible to hold elections in 2009, elections were held in 137, and 100 towns had councils which had been acclaimed. On October 27, special elections are scheduled to be held in 29 municipalities which did not receive sufficient nominations to form a council. The Towns of Hawkes Bay and Port Saunders, whose elections were deferred for amalgamation considerations, will be holding their elections on October 20, 2009. A list of municipalities holding special elections is provided below.

The department will now focus on addressing vacancies that exist and securing councils for those municipalities who still require municipal representation, said Minister Whalen. We will also continue our efforts to promote the important work of municipal councils, and build on the MakeYourMarkNL campaign to initiate discussion and encourage others to consider participation in municipal council for future elections.
