Provincial Government to Support
Continued Fire Training in Labrador
Firefighter training is being offered
in Labrador as announced by the Honourable Dianne
Whalen, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister
Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland
and Labrador (FES-NL).
"The executive of the Newfoundland and
Labrador Association of Fire Services advocated for the
delivery of fire training in Labrador," said Minister
Whalen. "We agree with the need to provide training in
2009 for the enhancement of skills for fire departments
in the region, similar to what weve done in the past.
Therefore, in October, the Provincial Government will
deliver courses to fire departments throughout
Labrador."
Firefighter training will be offered
from October 3-9 in Labrador, with certification testing
taking place on October 10. Specifically, FES-NL will
offer the National Fire Protection Association 1001 (NFPA
1001) and Firefighter Survival in Labrador City. FES-NL
will also offer a two-day Defensive Firefighting course
and one-day Fire and Emergency Services Instructor
course in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
"We are pleased to see advanced
firefighter training being offered to our colleagues in
Labrador," said Vince Mackenzie, President of the
Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Fire Services.
"Recognizing the logistical challenges of providing
onsite training Labrador, we applaud Fire and Emergency
Services commitment to deliver training everywhere in
our vast province."
FES-NL holds two training sessions per
year throughout the province, called Fire and Emergency
Services Training Schools. These nine-day events offer a
variety of fire and emergency management courses and
certifications. Following the Labrador training, FES-NL
will host a training school in Stephenville in late
October.

training can be found at
