A municipal capital works investment of approximately
$487,000 will support work to secure and improve roads
in the Town of Campbellton.
"Investing in road infrastucture is extremely
importantly to ensure that municipalities have safe,
efficient and secure services," said the Honourable
Dianne Whalen, Minister of Municipal Affairs. "The town
has been experiencing problems with the roads in
Campbellton including drainage problems, and challenges
pertaining to rocks and snowclearing. We are pleased to
work with the town to invest in upgrades and paving to
Seaview Lane, Decker Drive and Kingman Drive."
"I am pleased to be joining Mayor Maisie Clarke and
the residents of Campbellton in celebration of this good
news," said Wade Verge, MHA for the District of
Lewisporte. "This investment by our government will
greatly improve driving conditions within the town."
In Budget 2009: Building on Our Strong Foundation,
the Provincial Government made an unprecedented
multi-year commitment of a 69 per cent increase in
municipal capital works funding for fiscal years
2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11. This commitment increased
the capital budget by $34.4 million annually, bringing
the total annual Provincial Government commitment to
$84.3 million.
The Provincial Government's infrastructure strategy
is valued at more than $4 billion over the next several
years. Provincial infrastructure projects totaling $1.6
billion will be tendered this fiscal year, creating an
estimated 15,000 jobs (some seasonal) and providing
significant economic stimulus to the economy of
Newfoundland and Labrador.
