Roddickton-Bide Arm to Receive $170,000 in Municipal Capital Works
Funding
The Williams Governments enduring commitment to
invest in communities to strengthen municipal services and support
regional cooperation initiatives was demonstrated today in another
Municipal Capital Works announcement by the Honourable Dianne Whalen,
Minister of Municipal Affairs.
The Town of Roddickton-Bide Arm will receive $170,000
to support two initiatives which include $110,000 to replace the pump at
the water supply station and $60,000 to purchase new fire protection
equipment. Funding was made available through the Provincial
Governments Municipal Capital Works Program
"The purchase of an emergency back-up generator and
pump will allow the town to provide emergency pumping capacity to their
systems during power outages, and the investment in new fire protection
apparel will replace aging equipment and help protect volunteers during
a fire or emergency situation," said Minister Whalen.
"I am pleased with the Municipal Capital Works Funding
announced for the Town of Roddickton-Bide Arm," said the Honourable
Trevor Taylor, MHA for the Straits and White Bay North. "Efficient water
supply systems and quality fire fighting equipment are essential to the
safety and well being of the residents of our communities."
In Budget 2009: Building on Our Strong Foundation,
the Provincial Government made an unprecedented multi-year commitment of
69 per cent increase in municipal capital works funding for fiscal years
2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11. This commitment increased the capital
budget by $34.4 million annually, bringing the total annual Provincial
Government commitment to $84.3 million.
The Provincial Government's infrastructure strategy is
valued at more than $4 billion over the next several years. Provincial
infrastructure projects totaling $1.6 billion will be tendered this
fiscal year, creating an estimated 15,000 jobs (some seasonal) and
providing significant economic stimulus to the economy of Newfoundland
and Labrador.
