Support Water and Sewer Upgrades and Road Resurfacing in Burnt Islands
The Town of Burnt Islands will replace a booster pump system on its
municipal water supply and recap half a kilometre of roads in the
community with just over $473,000 provided through the
Canada-Newfoundland Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF).
The funding was announced today by the Honourable Keith Ashfield,
Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA);
the Honourable Dianne Whalen, Minister of Municipal Affairs; and Burnt
Islands Mayor Kevin Hardy.
These projects will greatly improve the quality of the muncipal water
system and improve a number of roads in the community, said Minister
Ashfield. Through our investment of just under $158,000, the Government
of Canada is helping this rural community improve its infrastructure and
the quality of life for its families.
The funding involves two projects the first will see the replacement
of the current supply booster pump system, as well as the installation
of new intake screens, and modifications to the chlorination building;
while the second will assist the town in repaving various roads in the
community.
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is pleased to invest over
$268,000 to help strengthen water and road infrastructure in Burnt
Islands, said Minister Whalen. These initiatives support our mandate
to ensure that communities across the province have access to safe,
reliable and efficient services. The municipal water system and
community roads will show great improvement for the community as a
result of this work.
We have 264 households currently connected to our municipal water
service that will have improved water quality because of this project,
said Mayor Hardy. The repaving project will also greatly improve the
safety of our municipal streets.
The Federal Government will contribute $157,757 towards the projects
while the Provincial Government will contribute $268,185. The Town of
Burnt Islands will provide $47,327.
The Canada-NL MRIF Agreement is administered jointly by the Department
of Municipal Affairs on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and
Labrador, and ACOA, on behalf of Infrastructure Canada.
