Federal and Provincial Governments Support Water System Extensions in Robert's Arm

The federal and provincial governments will provide funding to assist the Town of Robert's Arm in extending its water lines to service an additional 30 residences in the community through a contribution of just over $335,000 from the Canada-Newfoundland Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF).

The funding was announced today by the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA); the Honourable Dianne Whalen, Minister of Municipal Affairs; and Robert's Arm Mayor Daphne Parsons.

"These extensions to the town's water infrastructure will provide 30 residential dwellings with upgraded services," said Minister Ashfield. "The Government of Canada, through ACOA, is pleased to provide just under $112,000 to help Robert's Arm improve its municipal infrastructure and enhance the quality of life of its residents."

"The availability of secure water services is important to the well-being of residents of Robert's Arm," said Minister Whalen. "The Provincial Government's investment of over $189,000 will strengthen municipal infrastructure, improve fire protection and modernize services."

The project will extend the main water lines on Millers Avenue and Paddocks Avenue to provide the 30 residential dwellings with upgraded services. The extension of the water lines will also improve fire protection with the installation of fire hydrants.

"The current line is not adequate to serve the homeowners on the two streets involved," said Mayor Parsons. "There is low water pressure, no fire protection and the potential for winter freeze up due to the small lines, so we will certainly be pleased to see this work completed."

"This is much welcomed news for the residents of these two streets," said Ray Hunter, MHA for Grand Falls-Windsor-Green Bay South. "These improvements will provide an enhanced level of safety, as well as added convenience, for those residing in this area."

The Government of Canada will contribute $111,712 towards the project while the Provincial Government will contribute $189,909. The Town of Robert's Arm will provide $33,514.

The Canada-NL MRIF Agreement is administered jointly by the Department of Municipal Affairs on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and ACOA, on behalf of Infrastructure Canada.
