Federal and Provincial Governments Support Water System Upgrades for Massey Drive

A doubling of the population of the Town of Massey Drive has required the community to install a new booster pumping station for the community's water supply system. The project will be funded with just over $520,000 provided by the federal, provincial and municipal levels of government through the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF).

The funding was announced today by the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA); the Honourable Dianne Whalen, Minister of Municipal Affairs; and Massey Drive Mayor Holly Walsh.

"This project will greatly improve the quality of the municipal water supply system," said Minister Ashfield. "Through our investment of just over $173,000, we are helping this growing community improve its infrastructure and improve the quality of life for its families."

The project will involve the installation of a new duplex domestic booster pumping station and upgrading of the existing pumping station. The project will also include the installation of two combination air release/vacuum valve chambers.

"In response to growth in the community, it is essential to ensure that water services are secured and that residents have modern, reliable infrastructure in place," said Minister Whalen. "Our government remains committed to investing in communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador to improve municipal infrastructure and promote vibrant communities. We are pleased to contribute just under $295,000 to strengthen water services for residents of Massey Drive."

"The need for another booster station resulted from additional demand being placed on the water system from a doubling in our population in the last eight years," said Mayor Walsh. "The project will address the need for additional pumping capacity to restore the volumes and pressures to the extreme ends of the town's distribution system."

"As the Town of Massey Drive continues to grow I am pleased to work with the town to ensure services meet the needs of residents," said the Honourable Tom Marshall, MHA for Humber East. "In order to achieve a vibrant community we must ensure appropriate services are provided and the addition of this bumper pumping station addresses an important need for Massey Drive."

The Government of Canada will contribute $173,452 towards the project while the Provincial Government will contribute $294,868. The Town of Massey Drive will provide $52,035.

The Canada-NL MRIF Agreement is administered jointly by the Department of Municipal Affairs on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and ACOA, on behalf of Infrastructure Canada.
