Federal and Provincial Governments Support New Water Treatment Plant for Belleoram

The federal and provincial governments will provide funding to assist the Town of Belleoram in constructing a new water treatment plant through a contribution of just under $670,000 from the Canada-Newfoundland Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF).

The funding was announced today by the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA); the Honourable Dianne Whalen, Minister of Municipal Affairs; and Belleoram Mayor Steward May.

"The new plant will provide the residents of Belleoram with a reliable source of clean water," said Minister Ashfield. "Through our contribution of just over $223,000, the Government of Canada will be helping the community improve its municipal infrastructure, enhance the quality of life for its residents and make everyday life better for everyone."

"We are pleased to invest over $379,000 toward construction of a new water treatment plant which will upgrade the existing distribution system and secure water services for the Town of Belleoram," said Minister Whalen. "Access to safe and efficient water services is vital to support sustainable communities throughout the province."

This project will provide the Town of Belleoram with a source of clean water. The work will include the construction of a water treatment plant and a new water storage tank. The access road to the area will be upgraded and a power source will be introduced for the facility to operate. The project will tie into the existing water distribution system and will not require the construction of a new system. The project will also mean increased economic activity for the south coast community.

"Water from the current supply has to be boiled before it is used for human consumption," said Mayor May. "There is a level of fishing and rock quarry activity in the community as well as seasonal tourism. With a better quality water supply, there is the potential for increased tourism."

Tracey Perry, MHA for Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune, is delighted with today's announcement. "The community of Belleoram has been very active in working with local industries and residents to improve overall well being. I am proud to support their initiatives and look forward to continued developments in the years to come."

The Federal Government will contribute $223,009 towards the project while the Provincial Government will contribute $379,115. The Town of Belleoram will provide $66,903.

The Canada-NL MRIF Agreement is administered jointly by the Department of Municipal Affairs on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and ACOA, on behalf of Infrastructure Canada.
