Federal and Provincial Governments Support Improvements to Water Supply in Norris Arm

The Town of Norris Arm will build a new chlorination system for the towns water supply with funding of more than $430,000 provided by the federal, provincial and municipal levels of government through the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF).

The funding was announced today by the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA); the Honourable Dianne Whalen, Minister of Municipal Affairs; and Norris Arm Mayor Fred Budgell.

This project will greatly improve the quality of the muncipal water system and address the issue of providing consistently clean water, said Minister Ashfield. Through our investment of just over $143,000, we are helping this rural community improve its infrastructure and the quality of life for its families.

The town will build new chlorination and soda ash systems (for pH control) for the municipal water system. The work will involve the construction of a new building and the installation of the two new systems.

Ensuring that residents have access to clean, safe water is critical for the health and well-being of families throughout our province, said Minister Whalen. Construction of a new chlorination system is an important project and will secure critical infrastructure for residents of Norris Arm. Our government is pleased to contribute over $243,000 to support improvements to the water system.

The Government of Canada will contribute $143,363 towards the project while the Provincial Government will contribute $243,716. The Town of Norris Arm will provide $43,009, and will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the building once it is constructed.

The original system was installed in the 1970s and has only had some minor improvements over the years, said Mayor Budgell. The project will provide consistent disinfectant and pH control of the water system.

"I am very pleased to see this investment into the municipal infrastructure of Norris Arm, said Wade Verge, MHA for Lewisporte. The improvement being planned to the Norris Arm chlorination system is terrific news. I am pleased to join with Mayor Budgell and the citizens of Norris Arm in celebration of the approval of this very important project.

The Canada-NL MRIF Agreement is administered jointly by the Department of Municipal Affairs on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, and ACOA, on behalf of Infrastructure Canada.
