Federal and
Provincial Governments Support Sewage Treatment Upgrades
in Port Blandford
The federal and
provincial governments will provide funding to assist the Town of Port
Blandford in retrofitting two existing sewage
lift stations through a contribution of just over $182,000 from
the Canada-Newfoundland Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF).
The funding was
announced today by the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State for
the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA); the Honourable Dianne
Whalen, Minister of Municipal Affairs; and Port Blandford Mayor Reginald
Penney.
These retrofits to
the lift stations will greatly increase the reliability of municipal
services in Port Blandford, said Minister Ashfield. The Government of
Canadas goal is to keep Atlantic Canada moving forward by investing in
projects that improve municipal infrastructure, enhance the quality of
life of residents and make everyday life better for all Canadians.
The Provincial
Government is pleased to contribute over $103,000 to secure and
modernize sewer services for Port Blandford, said Minister Whalen.
Our government remains committed to investing in municipal
infrastructure to ensure that communities throughout the province have
access to safe, reliable and efficient services.
The
work is necessary because these two existing sewage lift stations are
nearing the end of their serviceable life, said Mayor
Penney.
These stations are key components in the town's sewage collection and
disposal system.
The upkeep and
improvement of such infrastructure is vitally important to the health
and safety of local residents, said the Honourable Paul Oram, MHA for
Terra Nova. This is a positive announcement and will enhance services
for the town and its people.
The Federal
Government will contribute $60,850 towards
the project while the Provincial Government will contribute $103,444.
The Town of Port Blandford will provide $18,255.
The
Canada-NL MRIF Agreement is administered jointly by the Department of
Municipal Affairs on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and
Labrador, and ACOA, on behalf of Infrastructure Canada.
