Federal and
Provincial Governments Support Road Improvements in Gambo
The
Town of Gambo will repave 1.5 kilometres on three streets in the
community and upgrade 13 water and sewer service laterals with funding
of more than $614,000 provided through the
Canada-Newfoundland
Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund (MRIF).
The funding was
announced today by the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of State for
the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA); the Honourable Dianne
Whalen, Minister of Municipal Affairs; and Gambo Mayor Lloyd Noseworthy.
The
town council has made minor repairs to its roads over the years but
everyone now recognizes that the present condition of the streets is
beyond minor repair, said Minister Ashfield.
The Government of
Canada is pleased to provide just under $205,000
for this project. Through ACOA, the Government of Canada is
helping Atlantic Canada move forward by investing in projects that
improve municipal infrastructure, enhance the quality of life of
residents and make everyday life better for all Canadians.
New
pavement and upgrades will help address deteriorating road conditions,
and secure water and sewer services for the Town of Gambo, said
Minister Whalen. We are pleased to contribute over $348,000 to improve
infrastructure, and support the delivery of reliable and efficient
services for residents.
The
repaving work will include Bonaventure Avenue, Donovan's Road and
Pinetree Road. The project also includes upgrades to 13 water and sewer
service laterals on Donovan's Road.
This
project will improve road conditions in our community and allow our
citizens to drive on safe and clean roads, said Mayor Noseworthy. The
water/sewer portion of this project will allow our citizens to have
safer drinking water and a more adequate sewer system with less breaks
and leaks. It also impacts on our tourism potential and the perception
that a visitor would get upon approaching or driving around our
community.
This upgraded
system was necessary to adequately meet the growing needs of the town,
said the Honourable Paul Oram, MHA for the District of Terra Nova. The
upkeep and improvement of the existing infrastructure is important to
the health and safety of the residents, and I am delighted that funding
is in place to improve services for the community.
The Government of
Canada will contribute $204,934 towards the
project while the Provincial Government will contribute $348,389.
The Town of Gambo will provide $61,480.
The Canada-NL MRIF Agreement is administered jointly by the Department
of Municipal Affairs on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and
Labrador, and ACOA, on behalf of Infrastructure Canada.
