Appointed to Greater Avalon and
Western Regional Waste Management Committees
The Honourable Dianne Whalen, Minister of Municipal
Affairs, today announced appointments to the Greater Avalon and Western
Regional Waste Management Committees. The appointments will support the
existing committees efforts to advance the modernization of solid waste
management for the Greater Avalon and Western regions in support of the
Provincial Solid Waste Management Strategy.
Geraldine Porter has been appointed to the Western
Regional Waste Management Committee, and Ralph Wiseman appointed to the
Greater Avalon Waste Management Committee.
"I am confident that Ms. Porter and Mr. Wiseman will
be strong assets and make valuable contributions to the Western and
Avalon committees," said Minister Whalen. "These individuals are
community leaders, with a demonstrated commitment to helping improve our
province, and I am pleased that they will be working in support of the
implementation of the Provincial Solid Waste Management Strategy."
Ms. Porter, an active community volunteer, is involved
with the Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital Foundation and Auxillary, St.
Josephs Church Committee, Bay St. George South Local Service District
and Area Development Association. She presently assists with operating
Cliffside Cottages in Robinsons.
"I am very proud to be part of the government's
initiative to improve waste management in our province. I look forward
to the implementation of proposed policy and positive results for the
environment," said Ms. Porter.
Mr. Wiseman, an active community leader, has a
background in municipal and provincial politics, and is currently the
Mayor of Paradise.
"I am pleased to have the opportunity to work with a
dedicated group of people to help implement the much needed waste
strategy for the greater Avalon," said Mr. Wiseman.
The $200 million Provincial Solid Waste Management
Strategy will introduce three full-service regional waste management
facilities on the Avalon, Central and Western areas of the island
portion of the province, and programs for the zones in Labrador to meet
the provincial waste management goals. The provincial strategy will aim
to reduce the amount of waste going into landfills in the province by 50
per cent supported by the use of disposal bans and development of new
waste diversion programs. The Greater Avalon Regional Site is expected
to be operational by 2010, the Central site by 2011, and the Western
Regional site no later than 2016.
It is expected that full implementation of the
strategy will occur by 2020.
