Daylight Saving Time to Begin March 8

Residents of Newfoundland and Labrador are reminded extended Daylight Saving Time comes into effect this weekend. Clocks should be moved ahead by one hour as of 12:01 a.m. on Sunday, March 8. Clocks will move back to Standard Time on Sunday, November 1, 2009.

"This is a friendly reminder for residents to make the appropriate adjustments to their clocks to reflect the time change," said the Honourable Dianne Whalen, Minister of Municipal Affairs.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador announced a change in January 2007 to extend Daylight Saving Time and ensure the daylight saving time pattern is consistent with other Canadian provinces and the United States. The move provides an additional one month of extended daylight to the province.

"As Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency services, I would also like to take this opportunity to remind people to replace batteries in smoke detectors and safety devices around the house," added Minister Whalen. "This is also the perfect time to update aging safety devices so you are prepared in the event of an emergency."
