Minister Announces Appointment of
Chief Judge
The Honourable Thomas W. Marshall, Q.C., Minister of
Justice and Attorney General, today announced the
appointment of Associate Judge D. Mark Pike as the new
Chief Judge of the Provincial Court of Newfoundland and
Labrador.
"Judge Pike is a well respected judge who has a great
deal of experience at all levels of the court," said
Minister Marshall. "His wealth of experience, his
commitment to improving the administration of justice
and his recent experience as Associate Chief Judge make
him the ideal candidate for Chief Judge. I congratulate
Judge Pike on his appointment and wish him every success
in his new role."
Judge Pike was appointed as the Associate Chief Judge in
November 2008 and served as Acting Chief Judge following
the retirement of former Chief Judge Milton R. Reid
earlier this year. Judge Pike is a graduate of Memorial
University with a bachelor of commerce and the
University of British Columbia with an LL.B. He has
worked with the Department of Justice and was previously
a Director of Benson Myles PLC. Prior to his appointment
to the bench, Judge Pike appeared at all levels of
court, including the Supreme Court of Canada and in 1996
was appointed a Master of the Supreme Court of
Newfoundland and Labrador. Recently, he served as Chair
of the Criminal Justice Section of the Canadian Bar
Association. On October 6, 2008, Mr. Pike was appointed
Queen's Counsel.
The appointment was effective on September 25, 2009 and
is for a period of seven years.
