Staff of West Coast Correctional Centre Save Inmates Life

The Honourable Thomas Marshall, Minister of Justice and Attorney General, today commended staff at the West Coast Correctional Centre in Stephenville for applying CPR on an inmate, which resulted in saving the inmates life.

Each and every day staff in our provinces correctional facilities display the utmost level of professionalism as they protect the overall security and accountability of the inmates and the facility, said Minister Marshall. Lieutenants Kenneth White and Glen McIsaac and the correctional officers Gary King, Paul Parsons and Shane Elliott who performed CPR on the inmate are to be commended for their immediate and courageous action in saving an inmates life.

On February 9, 2009, staff members of the West Coast Correctional Centre were informed by an inmate that another inmate was in distress in the exercise room and appeared to be having a heart attack. Staff responded immediately and administered CPR to the inmate until paramedics arrived. The inmate was later transported to the local hospital by ambulance and now appears to be in good health.

This is an example of the commitment our corrections staff have to their job and to the protection of inmates, said Graham Rogerson, Superintendent of Prisons (Acting). I am proud to be associated with these men.
