Royal Newfoundland Constabulary Appointments Announced

The Honourable Tom Marshall, Minister of Justice and Attorney General, today announced senior appointments for the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC). Superintendent June Layden and Inspector William Janes have both been permanently appointed to their positions.

"Throughout their careers, both officers have demonstrated a commitment to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary and the communities which the force serves," said Minister Marshall. "Superintendent Layden and Inspector Janes will no doubt continue their strong leadership in these positions and provide guidance for all members of the RNC."

Superintendent Layden is a native of Gambo and a 28-year veteran of the RNC. She has served as platoon commander within the St. Johns Street Patrol Division and as RNC media relations officer. She holds certificates from both the Canadian Police College and Dalhousie University and is completing a bachelor of arts (police studies) program and a certificate in public administration from Memorial University.

Inspector Janes is a native of St. Johns and is a 24-year veteran of the RNC. He has served with the Criminal Investigation Division, Joint Forces Drug Operations, the Tactics and Rescue Unit and recently as the commanding officer of the Patrol Support Services.

"The strength of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is due to the commitment of its membership," said RNC Chief Joe Browne. "Both Superintendent Layden and Inspector Janes exemplify the dedication of the Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who choose to serve their province through policing."

"This is the first time a female member of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary has attained the rank of superintendent on a permanent basis and marks a significant milestone for the force," said Minister Marshall. "I congratulate Superintendent Layden and Inspector Janes on their appointments."
