With a $295,084 investment from the
Provincial Government, the Town of Burin is developing
an industrial area for health sector suppliers and
complementary service providers that have expressed an
interest in locating in the community. This commercial
expansion strengthens the towns position in the
regions economy, providing additional business and
employment opportunities for both the residents of Burin
and outlying communities.
The announcement was made at the Burin
Town Hall, where Minister Skinner was joined by the
Honourable Clyde Jackman, MHA for Burin-Placentia West;
Kevin Lundrigan, Mayor of Burin; and members of the
business community.
By identifying and pursuing an
economic development opportunity, the Town of Burin is
contributing to the sustainability of the entire
region, said Minister Skinner. Supporting
infrastructure development of this nature in key growth
sectors is a priority of the Provincial Government and
an important mechanism for attracting new business
development and creating long-term employment
opportunities.
The Town of Burin contains a
significant number of established health care services
including a group of medical, dental and physiotherapy
clinics and a pharmacy. Centrally located on the eastern
side of the Burin Peninsula, the towns health care
providers serve 39 surrounding communities and
approximately 21,000 residents.
I am pleased the Provincial
Government is able to support this industrial
enhancement project that brings tremendous immediate and
long-term benefits to the region, said Minister Jackman.
The project employs local contractors and construction
workers, and will contribute significantly to the local
economy through the purchase of local goods and
services, and strengthens the regions competitiveness
for attracting future business ventures.
The current initiative comprises the
development of seven commercial lots adjacent to the
Burin Peninsula Health Care Centre and surrounding
health-related clinics covering approximately eight
acres of land. Project activities include land clearing,
road construction, and water and sewer installation.
By having these new, fully-serviced
commercial lots adjacent to the Burin Peninsula Health
Care Centre, it will enable the town to be more
competitive in attracting new business, said Mayor
Lundrigan. We have to be ready and be in a position to
take advantage of the new opportunities that are on the
horizon.
This initiative was funded through the
Regional/Sectoral Diversification Fund (RSDF), which
through Budget 2009: Building on Our Strong Foundation
was increased to an $8 million fund. Administered by the
Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development,
the RSDF provides non-repayable contributions to
economic development agencies for initiatives that
address regional and sectoral development and
diversification.
