Renovations to St. Gabriels Hall to Create New Opportunities

A well-known landmark in Marystown for over 93 years, St. Gabriels Hall is undergoing significant renovations that will improve its ability to display the talents of local residents and attract outside acts and performers to the area. The renovations, made possible by a $51,887 investment from the Provincial Government, are focused on complementing existing cultural attractions, along with creating new opportunities for local businesses to capitalize on increased visitation to the area.

"For close to a century St. Gabriels Hall has been entrenched as a key element of the Town of Marystown," said the Honourable Shawn Skinner, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development. "These renovations ensure that St. Gabriels Hall will continue to play a focal point for the community for many years and serve as a venue for the performing arts. By modernizing the facility, the communitys ability to attract greater interest in the area will help stimulate opportunities for various businesses and attractions."

St. Gabriels Hall has served as a school, community centre, church and venue for many events including fairs, exhibitions, and graduations. Its main hall seats approximately 400 and has also hosted performances from the Masterless Men, Jim Payne and Fergus OByrne, and Kevin Collins, along with many more.

"There are significant opportunities for Marystown and the entire Burin Peninsula in the provinces tourism industry," said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, MHA, Burin-Placentia West. "Through the restoration of St. Gabriels Hall, the Provincial Government is enabling organizations at the local level to pursue those opportunities and improve local infrastructure so that they are enjoyed and economic potential maximized."

The renovations are anticipated to be completed by spring 2010 and will include upgrades to the facilitys heating/ventilation system, the electrical, plumbing, flooring, sound system, and seating facilities. These renovations build upon previous work that included construction of a new stage, bar, kitchen, and wheelchair accessible washrooms.

"Without this funding, St. Gabriels Hall, as a not-for-profit organization, would not be able to see its restoration through to fruition," said John Baker, St. Gabriels Hall. "To date, in collaboration with our partners we have invested significantly in the facilitys restoration, both inside and outside. This funding allows us to modernize the hall and make upgrades to its antiquated heating system and equip the building with air conditioning. These are significant improvements to this historic building."

This initiative was funded through the Regional/Sectoral Diversification Fund (RSDF), which through Budget 2009: Building on Our Strong Foundation was increased to an $8 million fund. Administered by the Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development, the RSDF provides non-repayable contributions to economic development agencies and community groups for initiatives that address regional and sectoral development and diversification.
