Trinity Historical Society Launches Initiatives to
Enhance Historic Sites
The Trinity Historical Society is
undertaking initiatives to beautify landscapes and
improve the structures of historical sites with the goal
of making them more attractive and adding to the visitor
experience. Supported by an investment of more than
$66,000 from the Provincial Government, these
initiatives leverage the areas unique and significant
cultural attractions to help generate economic activity
and new business opportunities.
"Within the tourism industry, cultural
tourism is a key growth sector as travellers seek new
and interesting learning experiences that are unique to
the area they are visiting," said the Honourable Shawn
Skinner, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural
Development. "Given the level of opportunity that exists
within the province in this sector, and in particular
the Trinity area, it is important for the Provincial
Government to invest in projects that ensure a positive
experience for visitors and maximize economic benefits
for the local business community."
Beautification initiatives will
include green space improvements and placement of
informative maps and signage at historic sites that
highlight specific points of interest in the region.
Additional work will include enhancements to the
historic buildings owned and operated by the Trinity
Historical Society such as the Trinity Museum, Green
Family Forge, Lester-Garland House, the Court House,
Gaol and General Building, and the local cooperage.
"The work that will be completed as
part of this project has been part of the societys
long- term plan for a number of years and we are pleased
that some of it will now be accomplished through the
funding approved by the Provincial Government," said Ian
White, President, Trinity Historical Society. "The
assistance will allow us to carry out some needed
building enhancement work to our historic sites in order
to ensure their preservation and stability for the
numerous visitors that visit them each season. We also
look forward to the completion of some other site
enhancement work, including landscaping, in order to add
to the overall visitor experience."
"Trinity and the surrounding area is a
unique and culturally significant destination those
seeking authentic experiences," said the Honourable Ross
Wiseman, MHA, Trinity North. "The Provincial
Governments support enables the Trinity Historical
Society to further position the area as a focal point
for the provinces tourism industry and will bring
sustainable benefits."
This initiative was funded through the
Regional/Sectoral Diversification Fund (RSDF), which
through Budget 2009: Building on Our Strong
Foundation was increased to an $8 million fund.
Administered by the Department of Innovation, Trade and
Rural Development, the RSDF provides non-repayable
contributions to economic development agencies and
community groups for initiatives that address regional
and sectoral development and diversification.
