Recognition of Vibrant Business Community Continues to Grow

The innovative and creative nature of Newfoundland and Labradors business community has led to increased industry acknowledgement at home and abroad. Atlantic Business Magazines recognition of 11 individuals from the provinces business community as part of its 11th annual Top 50 CEO Awards reflects the success and vision of those driving the provincial economy.

Word of the world-class business and academic communities unfolding in the province and those contributing to its success is being spread across the province, across Atlantic Canada, and across the globe, said the Honourable Shawn Skinner, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development. During these times of economic uncertainty, to rise above your competition, secure positive results, and contribute to the collective good of a province is a tremendous feat.

Atlantic Business Magazine annually profiles those business leaders through its Top 50 CEO Awards who have separated themselves with their vision, hard work, and outcomes. These individuals have also overcome challenges, displayed leadership, and contributed to the growth of their community.

Traditionally, Newfoundland and Labrador has had a lower number of CEOs represented in the annual awards versus other Atlantic provinces comprising approximately 14 per cent of the selected CEOs. In 2009, the number increased to 22 per cent and is now on par with the provinces population versus that of the region.

What is perhaps most impressive is that their selection is not based on politics, geography, or the largest advertising budget but by their peers, said Minister Skinner. Recipients are first nominated and later evaluated by a cross-regional panel of distinguished business people. Their successes represent the entrepreneurial spirit and growing level of optimism that local businesses can compete on any stage and in any environment.

Recognized individuals from Newfoundland and Labrador include Ken Bennett of Johnson Inc.; Terrence Bowles of the Iron Ore Company of Canada; Jerry Byrne of DFB Group; Allison Chaytor-Loveys of Newfoundland and Labrador Credit Union; Frank Coleman of Coleman Group of Companies and Humber Valley Paving Ltd.; Keith Collins of the St. Johns International Airport Authority; Nora Duke of Fortis Properties; Christopher Hickman of Marco Group of Companies; Captain Sid Hynes of Oceanex; Stephen Winter of the Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corporation; and Melvin Woodward of the Woodward Group of Companies.

Their successes and the successes of an entire business community motivate us as a government, said Minister Skinner. I am confident that through continued investments and our commitment to creating a business environment conducive for success we can continue to secure a greater proportion of Top 50 CEOs.
