Improved West Coast Trail Network to Boost Local Tourism Industry

To strengthen the provinces western region as a destination for those seeking outdoor adventure activities, the Outer Bay of Islands Enhancement Committee is improving three hiking trails that link to a series of attractions near Lark Harbour and York Harbour. Made possible by a Provincial Government investment of more than $30,000 the enhanced hiking and exploration venue increases the potential for new business opportunities among local entrepreneurs and tourism operators.

The Bay of Islands has long been a popular destination for both residents and tourists because of its natural attractions and historic sites, said the Honourable Shawn Skinner, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development. This investment in recreational infrastructure and the regions natural assets create an environment that is conducive for leveraging tourism-related business opportunities. It further enhances the regions position as a leader in adventure tourism.

The trail network connects to places such as the Captain Cook Monument at Lark Harbour, the beautiful remote beach at Cedar Cove, the scenic coastline and sea caves around Bottle Cove, and the hiking adventures of Blow Me Down Mountains. The development will also feature the extension of the Copper Mine Cape Trail to become a leg of Newfoundland and Labradors 1,200-kilometre portion of the well-known International Appalachian Trail.

"This is an exciting time for our committee to be involved in trail development as more and more people are turning to hiking as a form of healthy recreation, said John Parsons, Outer Bay of Islands Enhancement Committee. The Outer Bay of Islands offers majestic scenery, breathtaking views and amazing photo opportunities. These three hiking trails range from easy walking for the beginner to challenging climbs for the seasoned hiker and it is our hope that this initiative will help benefit the local economy through increased tourism activity."

The Outer Bay of Islands Enhancement Committee is a volunteer organization that is pursuing initiatives that support economic development. With several years of combined experience in business, municipal affairs and community development, a focus of the group is infrastructure development that will increase visitation to the regions attractions.

Todays tourists are seeking experiences that offer new and interesting challenges, said Terry Loder, MHA, Bay of Islands. Through this initiative, the Outer Bay of Islands Enhancement Committee supports the establishment of new tourism operators, creates opportunities for adventure-tourism operators, and ensures the best possible visit for tourists to the area.

The project was funded through the Regional/Sectoral Diversification Fund (RSDF). Budget 2009 includes $8 million for new initiatives through the RSDF, which provides non-repayable contributions to economic development agencies for initiatives that address regional and sectoral development and diversification.
