Task Force Names Members of Community Development Committee

The Ministerial Task Force established to respond to the closure of the AbitibiBowater Mill in Grand Falls-Windsor, today announced the members of a Community Development Committee. The committee will work closely with the Ministerial Task Force and Provincial Government officials to develop and implement strategies to advance short- and long-term sector and project opportunities.

"The Community Development Committee will play a central role in facilitating information sharing, greater dialogue, and collaboration between the Provincial Government and communities impacted by the closure of the mill in Grand Falls-Windsor," said the Honourable Shawn Skinner, Chair of the Ministerial Task Force and Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development. "The members will be bringing significant knowledge and experience to the table. I am confident that these individuals will be able to contribute meaningfully to advancing economic development initiatives in the region."

Consisting of community, business, and union leaders, the committee is supported by an Interdepartmental Senior Officials Committee. Committee members are; Deborah Armstrong, Peggy Bartlett, Ben Blackmore, Janis Boone, Sandra Carey, Cyril Farrell, Darrin Finn, Heather Fudge, Harry Hallett, Gary Hennessey, Karl Inder, Cyril Langdon, George McDonald, Wayne Mills, and Carolyn Morgan. The committee will identify short- and long-term opportunities and priorities focused on economic development and diversification.

Minister Skinner, and the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment, met with members of the Community Development Committee on Tuesday, March 10, to discuss the work completed to date and next steps.

"Tuesdays meeting allowed us to come together and highlight priority areas of investment and potential sectors on which to focus our attention," said Minister Sullivan.  "A collective and collaborative approach is required to strengthen the central region.  While it will take time to see and feel the impact of the Community Development Committee, we remain committed to working together to strategically position the region for tomorrow and years to come."
