Old Perlican Marina to Expand

The Lower Trinity South Regional Development Association, with the support of a $55,658 investment from the Provincial Government, is launching the expansion of the Old Perlican Marina. Marina expansion will alleviate congestion and enable the facility to accommodate small pleasure crafts and position the community as a destination for recreational boaters.

"Located at the tip of the Bay de Verde Peninsula, Old Perlican is well known to recreational boaters," said the Honourable Shawn Skinner, Minister of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development. "The further development of the marina will add to the attractiveness of the area as a boating destination and provide the necessary services and amenities that visitors are seeking."

Scheduled for completion in spring 2009, phase one of the expansion includes the installation of ' an 80-foot breastwork' and construction of five additional floating docks with electrical service. The association is also working towards development of an additional 160 feet of breastwork and an upland area for RV parking/camping.

"It is important that we continue to invest in the rural areas of our province, building upon the infrastructure that is already in place," said the Honourable Charlene Johnson, MHA for Trinity - Bay de Verde. "This is a wonderful example of how we can work co-operatively with community development groups to bolster the potential of the area and help to further establish its existing tourism product."

The Lower Trinity South Regional Development Association is a not-for-profit community-based group with a volunteer board of directors and a membership of approximately 150.

"We have worked a long time to see this phase of the marina project in the Old Perlican area," said Francis Glynn, President, Lower Trinity South Regional Development Association. "Not only will it attract the recreational boater but it will create opportunities for economic spin-offs for the region."

Funding for this project is provided through the Provincial Government's Regional/Sectoral Diversification Fund (RSDF). RSDF is a $5-million fund that provides non-repayable contributions to economic development agencies for initiatives that address regional and sectoral development and diversification.
