Employment Transitions Program Extended to Grand
Falls-Windsor
Single
parents in the central region may now avail of dedicated
employment transition support. The Honourable Susan
Sullivan, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and
Employment, was in Grand Falls-Windsor today to
officially launch Employment Transitions in the central
region.
Single parents often face unique barriers to
employment, said Minister Sullivan. The Provincial
Government is committed to helping people overcome these
barriers and transition to greater self-reliance in
todays labour market.
Employment Transitions enables single parents to
participate in a nine-week program consisting of
sessions that focus on career planning, job readiness,
job maintenance, and life skills. Participants also
receive access to individual counseling, an earned
income supplement and job advancement supports following
completion of the program.
Employment Transitions has been operating in Corner
Brook since March 2006 and has been highly successful
with 80 per cent of the 100+ participants going on to
work or post-secondary training.
It is my hope that the program in central will build on
the incredible success of the Corner Brook program,
added Minister Sullivan. When we help people identify
possibilities and explore opportunities, they can
overcome their barriers and find and secure meaningful
employment. I am confident that through Employment
Transitions, single parents in the central region will
receive the support they need to make positive life
changes.
The Department of Human Resources, Labour and Employment
is an active partner with the Single Parent Association
of Newfoundland and supports its successful program in
St. Johns and Conception Bay North. The department also
expects to open an Employment Transitions program in
Happy Valley-Goose Bay in early 2010.
Employment Transitions is an initiative of the Poverty
Reduction Strategy, which was created to reduce,
alleviate and prevent poverty throughout the province.
The goal of the strategy is to make Newfoundland and
Labrador the province with the lowest level of poverty
in Canada within a 10-year period. $132.2 million was
allocated in Budget 2009: Building on Our Strong
Foundation to assist with poverty reduction efforts.
