Multiculturalism Milestone Celebrated
One year ago, the Government of Newfoundland and
Labrador launched a policy on multiculturalism designed to celebrate all
cultures in recognition that diversity leads to creativity, innovation
and economic growth. Today, representatives from the Provincial
Government, community-based organizations and other stakeholders,
gathered at The Rooms in St. Johns to celebrate this important
milestone.
"The policy on multiculturalism is intended to promote
respect, equality, collaboration and inclusive citizenship for all
people living in this province," said the Honourable Susan Sullivan,
Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment. "I am extremely
proud of all the work that has taken place over the past year toward
achieving our goals."
Since the launch of the policy on multiculturalism,
the Office of Immigration and Multiculturalism has successfully
partnered with community groups, agencies and other government
departments on its implementation. A series of province-wide,
community-based focus groups were also conducted in order to receive
input and identify the cultural needs within communities. A report
outlining these focus groups observations was released during todays
event.
"The consultative process was extremely informative
and I appreciate the advice and recommendations provided to government
by members of our community organizations," said Minister Sullivan. "We
are pleased with the support received from community partners across
Newfoundland and Labrador and we remain committed to working together to
achieve our shared goals."
Lloydetta Quaicoe, Executive Director of Sharing Our
Cultures, also participated in todays celebration.
"The Provincial Governments policy on
multiculturalism fosters cross-cultural collaboration while working to
build a vibrant and diverse province," said Ms. Quaicoe. "Sharing our
Cultures was very pleased to have been a part of the consultation
process and we are proud to join the Provincial Government in
celebrating the one-year anniversary of this important policy today."
The policy on multiculturalism enables the Office of
Immigration and Multiculturalism to partner with government departments
and non-governmental organizations to promote integrative, inclusive
citizenship where rights and responsibilities of all citizens are
respected to enhance cultural identity. The policy also encourages
Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to welcome immigrants into their
communities.
"The policy on multiculturalism encourages the
celebration of cultural diversity, supports the provincial immigration
strategy, and fosters successful settlement and integration of
newcomers," added Minister Sullivan. "It is enhancing cross-cultural
understanding throughout the province, and I am very proud of the
successes we have accomplished this year. I look forward to many
successes still to come."
