Province Launches New Online Immigration Resources

The Provincial Government, through the Office of Immigration and Multiculturalism (OIM), officially launched new online resources for prospective immigrants and newcomers today. This new site, www.nlimmigration.ca, was developed as part of the Going to Canada web portal initiative a federally-funded national initiative aimed at enhancing and unifying the appearance and content of Canadian web resources that help people immigrate to Canada.

"The main objective of this initiative is to make accurate, current, relevant, and consistent resources available online for people who want to move here from other countries," said the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment. "By making the immigration process easier through improved online experiences, I believe we can establish Newfoundland and Labrador as a preferred destination for those considering coming to Canada. In doing so, we will enhance our ability to attract and retain new Canadians, which in turn will help address demographic and labour challenges that we foresee in the coming years."

The Department of Human Resources, Labour and Employment has worked in collaboration with Citizenship and Immigration Canada to co-ordinate and align the provincial immigration website, as well as several municipal websites, through the Going to Canada Immigration Portal. Newfoundland and Labrador is receiving $820,000 from the Federal Government over a four-year period to support its participation in this initiative. This funding is being used to enhance online content, tools and services, and also to help several municipalities improve their online resources so that they can establish themselves as ideal settlement locations for immigrants.

"This initiative will provide newcomers with a trusted source for information and services, while also enhancing awareness of each province among prospective immigrants," said the Honourable Jason Kenney, Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism. "I hope this new website will assist both Newfoundland and Labrador and Canada to meet our immigration goals and help newcomers settle in the province."

The new online resources are one of several projects by the Office of Immigration and Multiculturalism to enhance attraction and retention of immigrants in the province. The OIM has a goal of increasing the number of immigrants entering the province to between 1,200 and 1,500 within the next four years, and has also set a goal of doubling the rate of retention. The office was officially established in January of 2008, and exists to carry out the provinces Immigration Strategy Diversity - Opportunity and Growth, which was launched in 2007.
