Health Minister Meets with Community Leaders to Discuss
New Clinic in Flowers Cove

The Honourable Paul Oram, Minister of Health and Community Services, met with regional community leaders yesterday (Thursday, October 1) to discuss operational and design work for construction of the new health clinic in Flowers Cove. Minister Oram has indicated that the new clinic will contain holding bed capacity to enable 24-hour operation as is currently provided. The minister also reiterated that there will be no changes to ambulance services.

"We continue to carefully examine programming and design options for the new facility in Flowers Cove," said Minister Oram. "As a result of this work and discussions with area residents, municipal leaders, MHAs and Cabinet, we have decided to continue to provide 24 hours of care at this facility. Our government is committed to ensuring the health, safety and well-being of residents. We take the concerns of our residents very seriously and work to ensure quality programs and services."

"Im pleased to see government initiating this course of action for the new facility," said Trevor Taylor, Straits-White Bay North MHA. "This will provide added reassurance for residents throughout the year."

The Provincial Government is investing approximately $9 million for a new health facility in Flowers Cove. Additional work regarding the overall programming will soon be completed and the Department of Health and Community Services will seek expressions of interest for design consulting services in the fall.

"Residents of the region will benefit greatly through this initiative," said Wallace Young, St. Barbe MHA. "The services offered here will continue to assist in the health and well-being of the people living in the area."

As announced on August 31, 2009, laboratory and X-ray services for residents in the Flowers Cove area will be provided at the Curtis Memorial Hospital in St. Anthony. Blood collection services will continue in Flowers Cove.
