Birchy Bay Company Sentenced in Provincial Court

The Department of Government Services announced today that D.E.T. Enterprises Ltd. has been sentenced in Grand Falls-Windsor Provincial Court upon pleading guilty to two violations of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations. Three charges were laid in April, 2009 as a result of an investigation carried out by the Occupational Health and Safety Division.

The company was fined $2,000 on each of two charges. The charge of failing to ensure that scaffolding was equipped with guardrails was withdrawn.

Between January and August 2008, inspections were conducted by an officer of the Occupational Health and Safety Division at two different house construction sites in Grand Falls-Windsor. The inspections determined that the companys employees were working without suitable fall protection, and the scaffolding being used had no guardrails and was supported by unsuitable foundations or sills. There was no accident or worker injury involved.
