The Department of Government Services announced today
that Sunshine Roofing Co. Limited of Lewisporte was
sentenced in Grand Falls-Windsor Provincial Court on
July 23, 2009, upon pleading guilty to two violations of
the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Regulations.
Five charges were laid in March 2009 as a result of an
investigation carried out by the Occupational Health and
Safety Branch.
In October 2008, an inspection conducted by an
officer of the Occupational Health and Safety Branch
determined that employees were working on the roof of a
private residence in Grand Falls-Windsor without proper
fall protection, eye protection or foot protection.
Furthermore, the workers were using an unsafe means to
access the roof and there was no first aid kit on site.
There was no accident or worker injury involved.
The company was fined $2,000 on the charge of failing
to provide fall protection and $2,000 on the charge of
using an unsafe means to access the roof. In addition,
the court order requires the company to provide proof of
compliance within 60 days with two outstanding orders
issued in December 2007 respecting worker health and
safety representative training, and fall protection
training for all its workers. The remaining charges were
withdrawn.
