Company Sentenced in Wabush Provincial Court

The Department of Government Services announced today that Carol Automobile Ltd. was sentenced in Provincial Court on May 25, 2009, upon pleading guilty to one violation of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.

An inspection of the premises in Labrador City in October 2006 uncovered deficiencies in both local and general ventilation which resulted in a number of orders being issued. This led to four charges being laid by the Occupational Health and Safety Branch in December 2008 relating to both the lack of ventilation on the premises, and to non-compliance with the related orders.

The company pled guilty to the charge of failing to install a ventilation system that would secure and maintain "the circulation of clean and wholesome air" in the building. The court order requires the company to pay a $2,000 fine, to install both local and general exhaust ventilation by a certain date, to monitor and report carbon monoxide levels for the next nine months, to refrain from operating the repair facility after June 25, 2009, unless the ventilation has been installed, and requires the principals to attend a seminar on indoor air quality. The three other charges were withdrawn.
