Expresses Condolences on Passing of Father Des McGrath
The Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Fisheries
and Aquaculture, today expressed his condolences on the passing of
Father Des McGrath. The well-known Roman Catholic priest was one of the
founders of the Fish, Food and Allied Workers (FFAW). Father McGrath was
instrumental in the founding of the Professional Fish Harvesters
Certification Board and served on its board of directors for a number of
years, including its executive committee. He also served on the board of
directors of the former Fishery Products International Limited.
"Our governments deepest sympathies and prayers go
out to the family and friends of Father McGrath," said Minister
Hedderson. "His commitment to the fishing industry in this province was
enduring and selfless. We extend condolences to his family and want them
to know that our thoughts are with them during this difficult time."
Father McGrath contacted Richard Cashin in 1970 to
suggest the formation of a union for fish harvesters. This was at a time
when harvesters received two and a half cents per pound for their fish
products. This was also a time when fish plant workers were excluded
from the protection of the minimum wage.
The FFAW today continues to provide a strong voice for
fish harvesters, deck hands and plant workers, throughout Newfoundland
and Labrador.
"Father McGrath certainly made an important
contribution to the fishing industry in our province," said Minister
Hedderson. "His work in the fishing industry contributed a great deal to
improving the lives of people in rural communities. This is a
significant loss to the industry and the province as a whole. He will be
missed."
