Government Extends Condolences on Passing of Michael Baker

The Honourable Jerome Kennedy, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board, and the Honourable Thomas Marshall, Minister of Justice, today expressed condolences on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador on the passing of Nova Scotia Finance Minister Michael Baker.

"I would like to extend my sincere condolences to Michael Bakers family and friends on his recent passing," said Minister Kennedy. "While I only had the privilege of knowing Minister Baker for a short time, I was impressed by his knowledge, intellect and passion for representing his province and its people. Even in the face of illness, he remained committed to carrying out his role as Finance Minister for as long as he possibly could, which speaks to the kind of person he was. There is no doubt that he will be sadly missed."

Minister Marshall, who worked with Michael Baker both in their roles as Minister of Finance and Minister of Justice, was saddened to hear of his former counterparts passing.

"I was honoured to have known and worked with Minister Baker on both justice and finance issues and recall conversations we shared in our roles," said Minister Marshall. "I admired his dedication to serving the people of Nova Scotia and there was no doubt that he had their best interests at heart. He was a true gentleman who cared about people. I extend my deepest sympathies to his family at this difficult time and to who all those who had the privilege of knowing him."

Michael Baker passed away on March 2, 2009 at the age of 52.
