Premiers Athletic Awards Application Deadline Approaching

The Honourable Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today encouraged the provinces athletes to submit applications for the 2010 Premiers Athletic Awards Program, which recognizes athletic achievements and provides financial assistance for the costs associated with training and competition.

The deadline for applications is December 21.

Time and again we have seen our athletes demonstrate that they have what it takes to compete at the elite levels of sport, said Premier Williams. As we enter into the sixth year of this program, it is encouraging to see how many young men and women throughout the province continue to excel in national and international competition. We want to ensure more of our finest athletes have that opportunity, and these awards demonstrate our commitment to help them realize their dreams.

Since it was initially implemented in 2004, the Premiers Athletic Awards Program has provided $412,500 in assistance to more than 400 athletes in Newfoundland and Labrador, said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. Year after year, this program provides our provinces young athletes with financial assistance to help them fulfill their athletic potential.

Athletes are asked to submit their application(s) to the provincial sport organization(s) they are associated with. Applications can be found online at: //www.tcr.gov.nl.ca/tcr/formsandApplications/index.html

The Premiers Athletic Awards Program is open to all residents of Newfoundland and Labrador who are presently attending school (including post-secondary), and are members of a provincial sport organization recognized by the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. Along with other criteria, athletes must have competed, and will continue to compete, for Newfoundland and Labrador at regional and national competitions, including the Canada Games.
