Premier Expresses Condolences on the Passing
of Former Innu President Daniel Ashini

The Honourable Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today expressed his condolences on the sudden passing of former Innu President Daniel Ashini at the young age of 49.

"Mr. Ashini was a dynamic leader and a strong advocate for the rights of the Innu people of Labrador," said Premier Williams. "He played a vital role in bringing Innu issues to the forefront and provided a strong voice for the Innu Nation."

Mr. Ashini was elected as President of the Innu Nation on several occasions. Prior to becoming president, he was a negotiator for the Innu on a number of land claims as well as during the development of the Voisey�s Bay mineral find.

"On behalf of the people and Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, I extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Ashini," said Premier Williams. "He will long be remembered for his tireless dedication to the people of the Innu Nation."

The Innu Nation represents 2,200 people, located mostly in two Innu communities of Sheshatshiu and Natuashish.
