Announces Board Appointments
The Honourable Shawn Skinner, Minister of Innovation,
Trade and Rural Development (INTRD), accompanied by
Glenn Janes, CEO of the Research & Development
Corporation (RDC) today announced the seven members
appointed to the RDC�s Board of Directors. The RDC is
the Crown entity for improving Newfoundland and
Labrador�s research and development capacity.
The following individuals have been appointed to the
RDC�s board with Jackie Sheppard, retired Executive Vice-President, Corporate and Legal,
and Corporate Secretary of Talisman Energy Inc, serving as Chair.

The two additional non-voting members of the board
are:

Minister (Acting) for Innovation, Research
and Advanced Technologies, INTRD, Government
of Newfoundland and Labrador.

RDC�s board," said Minister Skinner. "Their unique
talents, scientific knowledge and business acumen will
guide the RDC in its mandate of improving the province�s
R&D performance for the long-term economic well-being
and prosperity of Newfoundland and Labrador. The board
will lead the RDC as it increases the volume, quality
and effectiveness of the government�s investment in
R&D."

and experience to the RDC. They are experts in their
fields which include energy, ocean technology, mining
and life sciences," said Glenn Janes, CEO of the RDC. "I
am delighted to have such a talented slate of board
members to guide us in this outstanding opportunity.
Through a focus on R&D, we will strengthen our
industries and public institutions to deliver long-term
economic prosperity for Newfoundland and Labrador."
The RDC is governed by its board of directors, which
is responsible for ensuring accountability and
transparency of programs, priority-setting, and
management of project funding as stated in the
Research and Development Council Act. Board members
were selected based on their knowledge and
sector-specific expertise in areas relevant to local
industry and the economy of Newfoundland and Labrador.
About the Research & Development Corporation
The RDC is a provincial Crown corporation that was
established to improve Newfoundland and Labrador�s
research and development performance. The Research
and Development Council Act was passed by the
Government of Newfoundland and Labrador in December
2008.
The Research & Development Corporation operates at
arm�s length from government but with responsibility for
providing advice and leadership within government. The
RDC works with research and development stakeholders
including industry, academia and government agencies and

BACKGROUNDER
RDC Governing Board: Biographies
Jacqueline (Jackie) Sheppard, Chair, is a Rhodes
Scholar and prominent businesswoman originally from St.
John's. Ms. Sheppard recently retired as Executive
Vice-President, Corporate and Legal, and Corporate
Secretary of Talisman Energy Inc., having joined
Talisman in 1993. She holds a
bachelor of arts from Memorial University, a BA and MA
from Oxford University, and an LLB from McGill
University. She brings extensive knowledge of the energy
sector and corporate governance to the RDC�s Board of
Directors.
Dr. Lawrence Cochrane, Vice-Chair, is the
Executive Director, Mining and Exploration at the Inco
Innovation Centre, Memorial University. Throughout his
career, he has worked with university researchers,
research organizations and consulting groups to improve
the understanding of geological processes and to
transform that knowledge into systems, methods or
technologies that identify and manage project risks and
add value to mining projects.
Alan Brown is Vice-President, East Coast Canada
with Suncor Energy Inc. (formerly Petro-Canada) and is
responsible for managing the company�s east coast
production assets. Prior to
joining Suncor, Mr. Brown held a number of senior
management roles during his 21 years with ExxonMobil. He
was appointed United Kingdom Operations manager, Chairman
of ExxonMobil�s UK Pension Trust and Co-Chairman of the UK
Oil and Gas Industry Safety Forum.
Gary Dinn is the chair of Newfoundland and
Labrador�s pre-eminent ocean technology cluster,
OceansAdvance. Mr. Dinn co-founded Rutter Technologies
in 1998 and served as a board member until his departure
in 2005. He is also Vice-President of Technology
Development of PanGeo Subsea, Inc. an innovator of 3D
and 4D acoustic technology and is active with the
Standards Council of Canada.
Dr. Ray Gosine is an expert in the fields of
telerobotics, machine vision and pattern recognition for
applications in the resource industries. Currently, Dr.
Gosine is Vice-President (Research) at Memorial
University and his recent research projects include
collaborations with C-CORE, INCO Ltd., the European
Space Agency, Baader-Canpolar, the Department of
Fisheries and Oceans, the Canadian Space Agency, PRECARN
Associates, the Canadian Centre for Fisheries
Innovation, the University of British Columbia, Ecole
Polytechnique, Montreal, the University of Toronto, and
the University of Waterloo.
Dr. Kari Kveseth is International Director of the
Research Council of Norway (RCN) and has been a member
of the organization since 1986. She has been a delegate
to several international organisations, including the
European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), the
Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development,
the European Union, and European Science Foundation.
Dr. Terry-Lynn Young is
a Canadian Institutes of Health Research-Regional
Partnership Program New Investigator and one of the key
team members of the provincial genetics team behind the
Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Interdisciplinary
Research in Human Genetics. Dr. Young is a molecular
geneticist leading current gene discovery projects that
include cardiovascular disease, deafness, blindness and
other genetic disorders through population-based
recruitment of multiplex families.
Non-voting board members:
Glenn Janes is the CEO of the RDC. He is a Rhodes
Scholar and holds a masters degree in environmental
change and management, and a masters degree in business
administration, both from Oxford University. He
completed a bachelor of science in chemistry at Yale
University. Mr. Janes has held a range of progressively
senior positions with companies involved in research,
development and technology commercialization processes,
including most recently, Imperial Innovations Group plc
in London, England.
Paul Morris is Assistant Deputy Minister (Acting) for Innovation,
Department of Innovation Trade and Rural Development,
Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. Mr. Morris has been with the Provincial
Government since 1978, serving with the Executive Council, Department of
Innovation, Trade and Rural Development, and Fisheries.
Mr. Morris has a bachelor of arts from Memorial
University.
