Falls-Windsor Resident Presented with Literacy Award
The latest recipient of the Council of
the Federation (COF) Literacy Award was honoured at a special ceremony
in Grand Falls-Windsor today. The Honourable Susan Sullivan, MHA for the
District of Grand Falls-Windsor-Buchans, on behalf of the Honourable
Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, presented Lillian
Moores, a resident of the town, with the COF Award medallion and
certificate signed by the Premier.
The 2008 award was presented to a literacy leader an accolade Ms.
Moores more than deserves, said Premier Williams. Over the past 20
years, she has been involved with Literacy Newfoundland and Labrador,
the Laubach Literacy Council, and is an Adult Basic Education
instructor. I am pleased we are honouring Ms. Moores with this award for
her more than two decades of promoting literacy.
The COF Literacy Award was created in 2004 in recognition of the
importance of literacy as an essential building block to a vibrant
society and economy. The award recognizes the valuable contributions
made by Canadians in the field of literacy and is presented annually in
each province and territory.
This is not the first time Ms. Moores has been recognized for her work
in literacy. In 2006, she received the Volunteer of the Year Award for
Laubach Literacy and the Canada Post Educator Award in 2007.
I had the honour of nominating Ms. Moores for this literacy award,
said Minister Sullivan. Her dedication to the promotion of literacy
throughout the years has been remarkable, and as a fellow teacher, I
marvel at her contribution to enhancing the educational achievement and
personal accomplishment of countless people in Central Newfoundland.
The Honourable Darin King, Minister of Education, also offered his
congratulations to Ms. Moores. Improving literacy levels is not
something that can be accomplished by government alone, said Minister
King. It requires the combined efforts of our education system,
community organizations, and teachers and volunteers. It is because of
people like Ms. Moore that individuals are able to increase their
literacy levels, and I commend her for her many years of dedication.
Nominations for the 2009 COF award have been called with entries to be
received on or before May 15.
The Council of the Federation comprises all 13 provincial and
territorial premiers. It enables premiers to work collaboratively to
strengthen the Canadian federation by fostering a constructive
relationship among the provinces and territories, and with the federal
government.
