Minister Celebrates Volunteer Week Across the Province

April 19-25 is National Volunteer Week and the Honourable Dave Denine, Minister Responsible for the Volunteer and Non-Profit Sector, is joining communities as they celebrate the contributions of volunteers during a number of recognition events.

This years theme, Volunteers Light Up Communities, represents the impact volunteers have on the people of the province. There are 187,000 volunteers that contribute 35 million hours of valuable unpaid time to their communities and community organizations every year. The dedication these volunteers show through their tireless efforts to make a difference in peoples lives light up communities across Newfoundland and Labrador.

"Volunteer Week is a week when we take time to thank all those who give back to the community through volunteering," said Minister Denine. "Volunteers contribute economically, socially, and culturally to the way of life people in the province have come to expect. They provide vital services that every person in this province avails of and for that we should commend these volunteers not just this week, but every day of the year."

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to supporting the voluntary and non-profit sector and allocated close to $1.1 million towards the Voluntary and Non-Profit Secretariat in Budget 2009. This will aid the secretariat in strengthening the relationship between the Provincial Government and the voluntary and non-profit sector, promoting volunteerism and social enterprise, enhancing the capacity of the sector and facilitating the development of provincial programs/policies to support the sector.
