Tentative Agreement Reached with Correctional Officers

The Honourable Jerome Kennedy, President of Treasury Board and Minister of Finance, announced today that the Provincial Government has reached a tentative agreement with the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE) Correctional Officers Bargaining Unit.

I am pleased that we were able to conclude a tentative agreement with correctional officers through the bargaining process, said Minister Kennedy. We have taken significant steps to improve the corrections system in this province and the reaching of a tentative agreement is an important achievement.

Carol Furlong, President of NAPE, said the reaching of a tentative agreement is a significant achievement. This is the first time in decades that correctional officers have negotiated an agreement, said Ms. Furlong. In the past correctional officers had to resort to interest arbitration. Weve very pleased that we are able to achieve a deal through collective bargaining.

No further details about the tentative collective agreement will be released at this time.
