The Effects of Violence Take the Stage in St. John's

The effects of violence unfold on the stage in a one-woman dark comedy, By a Thread, directed by Andy Jones and presented in St. John's by the Resource Centre for the Arts (RCA) Theatre Company in recognition of Violence Prevention Month.

The play was written by Kids in the Hall writer Diane Flacks and stars Laura-Marie Smith as Rose, a young artist dealing with haunting and artistically-crippling family secrets from her past.

"Having the effects of violence recognized through artistic expression is a meaningful way to raise awareness of violence and the terrible impacts of this very real social problem," said the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Lead Minster of the Violence Prevention Initiative and Minister Responsible for the Status of Women. "We applaud the Resource Centre for the Arts for taking such a proactive approach to Violence Prevention Month and raising awareness of violence in the community."

"The designation of February as Violence Prevention Month raises awareness of the fact that violence is unacceptable. It destroys all that is good," said Amy House, Artistic Animateur of the RCA Theatre Company. "Art has the power to heal and inspire. This play, By a Thread, though it touches on dark issues of abuse, is lively and funny and the audience experiences the journey of an artist as she digs deep within herself to find her own voice after having it suppressed by circumstances in her past. It's quite the ride, very physical and a great night's entertainment."

The Provincial Government is committed to reducing violence in Newfoundland and Labrador through its Violence Prevention Initiative, a six-year, $9.2-million strategy to raise awareness, support victims and find long-term solutions.

RCA Theatre Company will stage By a Thread at the Majestic Theatre, 390 Duckworth Street, St. John's, tonight, Thursday, through Sunday, February 5 to 8. Doors open at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are available at the Holy Heart Box Office and at the door by cash only.
