Supporting Future Leaders in Newfoundland and Labrador

Newfoundland and Labrador is home to several youth leadership programs that provide children and youth with the opportunity to thrive. The Provincial Government is pleased to continue supporting the work conducted by The Duke of Edinburghs Award, Girl Guides and Scouts Canada and Allied Youth with grants totaling $147,742 in 2008-09.

"The Provincial Government believes strongly in investing in our youth to help them build a spirit of community service and become the leaders of tomorrow," said the Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment. "Through the programs offered by these organizations, children and youth learn the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, build character and have the opportunity to explore personal leadership."

The Duke of Edinburghs Award program received a grant of $45,000. The award program encourages all youth ages 14 to 25 to participate in new activities and to continue setting goals that build on self-confidence and self-reliance.

The Girl Guides received a grant of $36,600 and Scouts Canada received $31,192. The programs offered through Guides and Scouts focus on contributing to the local community in a positive way and encouraging personal development.

This year, the Allied Youth was provided with a grant of $34,950 to continue with programming focused on teaching youth to make decisions and be positive leaders in the community.

Both adult and youth volunteers participate as board members, supervisors and community leaders to assist these organizations in offering programs that enable youth development and help build better communities throughout the province.

"Our young people represent the future of our province," said the Honourable Dave Denine, Minister for Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister Responsible for the Volunteer and Non-Profit Sector. "The work of these volunteers will go a long way in enriching the lives of our youth and I want to thank these volunteers for their hard-work and dedication."
