Environmental Assessment Bulletin
The Honourable Charlene Johnson,
Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events
relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.
UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:
Southwest River, St. George's Quarry
Proponent: Humber Valley Aggregates
and Asphalt Ltd. (Reg. 1460)
The proposal is to develop an
aggregate quarry for use as cement/sand. The quarry is
approximately four hectares and is adjacent to Southwest
Brook. The undertaking is located at the intersection of
the Trans Canada Highway and Route 480 to Burgeo.
The undertaking was registered on
December 22, 2009; public comments are due by February
3, 2010; and the minister's decision is due by February
5, 2010.
Port aux Basques to Crow Head Hiking
Trail (IATNL) (Reg. 1461)
Proponent: International Appalachian
Trail, Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter Inc.
The proposed trail will be developed
adjacent to the Long Range Mountains from Port aux
Basques in southwestern Newfoundland to Crow Head in the
north. The proposed IATNL will total approximately 700
kilometres of new non-contiguous walking/hiking trail
connected by existing trails and roads. The over 20 new
sections of trail will range in length from one
kilometre to over 100 kilometres, much of it over barren
terrain requiring only rock cairns to mark the route.
The proposed IATNL will be approximately one metre wide
with no bridges or board walks. Refer to previous
registrations 1194 and 1372 for previously approved
sections of the proposed trail. Development of the
proposed IATNL will be phased in over 10 years.
The undertaking was registered on
December 23, 2009; public comments are due by February
3, 2010; and the minister's decision is due by February
6, 2010.
UNDERTAKINGS RELEASED:
Glenfair Farms Cranberry Farm
Development, Wooddale
Proponent: Glenfair Farms Ltd. (Reg.
1446)
This undertaking was released from
environmental assessment subject to the following condition:
Prior to the start of
construction, the proponent must develop
monitoring survey protocols in consultation
with the Wildlife Division for waterfowl,
other bird species, and for any species at
risk that might be within the cranberry farm
site area. The annual results of these
monitoring surveys will be provided to and
discussed with the Wildlife Division and
Canadian Wildlife Service. In addition,
mitigation measures should be developed to
reduce human-waterfowl interactions during
construction and operation of the cranberry
farm.
