Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT COMMITTEE APPOINTED:

Salmonier Pond Access Road and Atlantic Salmon Nursery
Proponent: Gray Aqua Group Ltd.                      (Reg. 1439)

The following agencies have been appointed to the Environmental Assessment Committee for the above undertaking and will provide the minister with scientific and technical advice on the Environmental Impact Statement:

  • Environmental Assessment Division, Department of Environment and Conservation
  • Environmental Services, Transport Canada
  • Lands Management Division, Department of Environment and Conservation
  • Wildlife Division, Department of Environment and Conservation
  • Forestry Services Branch, Department of Natural Resources
  • Aquaculture Development, Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture
  • Environmental Protection Branch, Environment Canada
  • Oceans & Habitat Management Branch, Fisheries and Oceans Canada

The committee will develop the guidelines which will highlight the environmental issues to be addressed in the EIS. The draft guidelines will be made available to the public for comment before being approved by the minister. The proponent is required to submit the EIS which will be available for public review. UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Registration: Peter's River, Botwood Quarry
Proponent: D. Byrne and Sons Ltd.                         (Reg. 1459)

The proposal is to develop an existing quarry (extension) to supply winter sand, sand for cranberry farms and pit run gravel for public use. The quarry is approximately five hectares in area and adjoins an existing quarry of approximately 9.5 hectares. The undertaking is located approximately 100 metres north of Peter's River bridge on Route 350 to Botwood.

The undertaking was registered on December 9, 2009; public comments are due by January 18, 2010; and the minister's decision is due by January 23, 2010.

UNDERTAKING RELEASED:

Forest Management Districts 9/16 Crown Five Year Operating Plan Amendment Proponent: Department of Natural Resources                (Reg. 1445)

This undertaking was released from environmental assessment subject to the following
condition:

  • The boundary for some of the harvest areas falls within proposed cottage development areas. It is required that no cutting occur within 100 metres of a cabin development area and 30 metres of a cabin. This requirement should be included as a condition of the domestic cutting permits.
