Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT REQUIRED:

Salmonier Pond Access Road and Atlantic Salmon Nursery
Proponent: Gray Aqua Group Limited
(Reg. 1439)

The Minister has advised the proponent that an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is required for this project. An Environmental Assessment Committee will be appointed to provide scientific and technical advice to the Minister and to prepare draft guidelines for conducting the EIS. UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:

Hiking Trail � Pouch Cove to Cape St. Francis
Proponent: East Coast Trail Association
(Reg. 1456)

The proposal is to upgrade a traditional coastal trail from Pouch Cove to Cape St. Francis on the Avalon Peninsula. This trail is a continuation of the trail development work that has been undertaken from St. John�s to Pouch Cove. The trail would be approximately one metre wide and seven kilometres long. Proposed trail construction would take place over the next two years. The trail would, for the most part, proceed through a wilderness setting with the addition of boardwalks, stairs and bridges where necessary.

The undertaking was registered on November 19, 2009; public comments are due by December 25, 2009; and the Minister�s Decision is due by January 2, 2010.

UNDERTAKING RELEASED:

Goose Arm Road, Deer Lake Forage Production
Proponent: Headline Holsteins Ltd.
(Reg. 1443)

This undertaking was released from environmental assessment subject to the following
conditions:

  • A 30 metre buffer zone on all wetlands and waterbodies to ensure adequate habitat for riparian and aquatic species.
  • Government is to be reimbursed for cutting silviculturally treated stands that have not reached sufficient age to produce merchantable volume.
