Women to Take to the
Wilderness in Gros Morne
Women who want to learn
outdoor survival skills in a supportive environment can
participate in the Becoming an Outdoors Woman program
scheduled for next month in Western Newfoundland. The
program will be held at Killdevil Camp, Lomond, Gros
Morne National Park, from October 23-25.
Learning skills of any type is a productive exercise,
but the experience is enhanced when it pertains to our
natural environment, said the Honourable Charlene
Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation. This
program allows women to connect with nature, learn how
to effectively participate in outdoor pursuits, and
permits them to connect with one another in a relaxed
setting.
Becoming an Outdoors Woman is open to women 18 years of
age and older who would like to pursue outdoor
activities, but feel they lack the necessary skills or
knowledge.
Participants have an opportunity to learn rifle,
shotgun, outdoor survival, map and compass, Global
Positioning System (GPS) navigation and fishing skills,
to name a few. Registration cost is $180 for two nights
accommodations, seven meals, instruction and use of
demonstration equipment. There are also scholarships
available for single mothers or students who may require
financial assistance.
I encourage women to learn first-hand the many skills
which they can carry with them throughout their lives
and pass on to their female relatives, said Minister
Johnson. Access and enjoyment of the great outdoors is
something which everyone should be able to experience,
and programs like this one help ensure that access.
