Hunting Season Opens in Province

The hunting season for big game officially gets underway this weekend in many parts of the province. Seasons for central and western portions of the island and Labrador open on Saturday, September 12. Big game hunting seasons for the remaining areas of the province open on October 3.

"Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have a true appreciation for our natural heritage, and participation in hunting and trapping provides opportunities for family and friends to experience these outdoor spaces," said the Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation. "These types of outdoor pursuits are a significant part of our culture and heritage."

Minister Johnson also said that hunters and trappers need to be cognizant of safety during this years hunting and trapping season.

"The safety of hunters themselves and all of our outdoor users, particularly in terms of firearms, should be considered at all times during the hunting season," said Minister Johnson. "Hunters and trappers should always use safety equipment such as personal flotation devices and helmets when required, and carry first aid kits, survival kits, navigational tools and communication equipment at all times during a hunt."

Detailed information about this years hunting seasons, bag limits and other related information is available in the 2009-10 Newfoundland and Labrador Hunting and Trapping Guide. Copies of the guide are available at Wildlife Division offices and Department of Natural Resources offices throughout the province. The guide can also be accessed on the Provincial Government website at: www.gov.nl.ca/env/wildlife/hnttrapfish/index.htm

"Responsible hunting and trapping is crucial towards the overall success of our provinces game and fur management programs," said Minister Johnson. "The information provided through licence returns, submission of jawbones and other biological samples contribute enormously to our understanding and sustainable management of wildlife populations. I would like to thank hunters and trappers for their contributions and wish them a safe and successful season."

Small game seasons also open during September in many areas of the province. The hunting season for ptarmigan and grouse for most areas on the island opens on September 19. Snowshoe hare seasons on the island open October 10.   In Labrador, small game seasons open on October 1.
