Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Goose Arm, Deer Lake Forage Production
Proponent: Headline Holsteins Ltd. (Reg. 1443)

The proposal is to develop approximately 260 hectares of suitable land for forage production within a Crown Land Agricultural Lease in the Deer Lake Agricultural Development Area. The proposed site is in the Goose Arm Road area on the north shore of Deer Lake. It is adjacent to other Crown land leases currently being farmed by Headline Holsteins Limited. The site is surrounded by wooded areas and is bounded by Deer Lake to the south, Crown land to the west, Goose Arm Road to the north and other agricultural leases operated by Headline Holsteins to the east. Development of this proposal will require the cutting of trees, removal of rocks, leveling and preparing the land for crops intended for consumption by livestock. Land development is proposed to begin in fall 2009.

The undertaking was registered on August 31, 2009; public comments are due by October 7, 2009; and the minister's decision is due by October 15, 2009.  

UNDERTAKING RELEASED:

Victoria Golf Course
Proponent: Mr. Bradley and James Baker (Reg. 1438)

The proponent must develop a buffer zone plan and a nuisance bird management plan in consultation with the Wildlife Division of the Department of Environment and Conservation to minimize impacts on water bodies and birds. Tees and greens are to be 50 metres from the high water mark and fairways are to be 20 metres from the high water mark.

WOMEN�S EMPLOYMENT PLAN ACCEPTABLE:

Long Harbour Commercial Nickel Processing Plant
Proponent: Vale Inco Newfoundland and Labrador Limited (Reg. 1243)

The minister has determined that the Women�s Employment Plan, dated May 2009, is acceptable. The plan was required as one of the conditions of release for the project announced on August 26, 2008.
