Environmental Assessment Bulletin

The Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act

UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:

Botwood Peter�s River/ Peter�s Pond � Quarry
Proponent: KDJ Enterprises (Reg. 1440)

The proponent plans to remove rock and gravel from an existing quarry site located approximately 200 metres from Peter�s River, in the Botwood area along Route 350 in central Newfoundland for the purpose of producing crushed gravel.

The undertaking was registered on July 27, 2009; public comments are due September 2, 2009; and, the Minister�s decision is due by September 10, 2009.

Wilburn Bay Road Fox Farm
Proponent: Vincent Enterprises (Reg. 1441)

The proposal is to construct and operate a blue fox and lynx farm on a 10 hectare agricultural lease on Wilburn Bay Road, 1.2 kilometres east of the North West River Highway (Route 520), north of the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay. There will initially be four wooden six metre x 30 metre barns and a building for equipment storage, pelting, and drying operations.  There will be manure composting storage area on-site. Lynx will number up to 130, with up to 150 blue fox with potential future expansion. Mink may be included at some point in the future as well. Construction is tentatively scheduled for September 2009.

The undertaking was registered on July 28, 2009; public comments are due by September 2, 2009; and, the minister's decision is due by September 11, 2009. 

UNDERTAKINGS RELEASED:

Southern Bonavista Peninsula Forage Land
Proponent: David Smart (Reg. 1421)

This undertaking was released from environmental assessment subject to the following condition:

  • The proponent must maintain a 30 metre buffer zone on all wetlands and waterbodies to ensure adequate habitat for riparian and aquatic species. In case clearing and grubbing is to occur in spring or early summer, trees and shrubs should be examined for active nests. If a nest is found, the shrub/tree should be left standing until the young have fledged.
  • Botwood-Peterview Cranberry Farm
    Proponent: Fabian Power (Reg. 1423)

    This undertaking was released from environmental assessment subject to the following condition:

  • The proponent must develop monitoring survey protocols in consultations with the Wildlife Division for waterfowl, other bird species, and for any species at risk that might be within the cranberry farm site area. The annual results of these monitoring surveys will be provided to, and discussed with the Wildlife Division and Canadian Wildlife Service.
