The Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of
Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events
relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental
Protection Act.
Environmental Impact Statement Requires Additional
Work:
Schefferville Area Iron Ore Mine
Proponent: Labrador Iron Mines Ltd.
(Reg. 1379)
Following public and agency review of the December 12,
2008, submission of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the
Schefferville Area Iron Ore Mine, it has been determined that the
proponent must provide additional information to supplement the EIS.
This includes further information on the potential use
of the area by woodland caribou, clarification on residue disposal
options and surface water protection, additional detail on mitigative
measures and clarification of stormwater management proposals.
UNDERTAKINGS REGISTERED:
Crown District 19A (Goose Bay) Five-Year Operating
Plan 2008-2012
Proponent: Department of Natural Resources/Innu Nation
(Reg. 1413)
District 19A contains 2.2 million hectares of land and
is located in the Upper Lake Melville area of Labrador. The Annual
Allowable Cut for the district is 200,000 cubic metres and there will be
both commercial and domestic harvest areas. Approximately 73 kilometres
of forest access road will be required from both the Crown and
commercial operators. Silviculture activities will focus on planting
1,000 hectares and pre-commercial thinning will be carried out on 500
hectares of land.
The undertaking was registered on March 11, 2009;
public comments are due by April 15, 2009; and the minister's decision
is due by April 25, 2009.
UNDERTAKINGS RELEASED:
Stephenville Shooting Range
Proponent: Town of Stephenville (Reg. 1401)
The undertaking is released from further environmental
assessment. However, since the undertaking is located within the Town of
Kippens Protected Water Supply Area (PWSA), the minister determined that
there exists an unacceptable risk to the town's water supply. Therefore,
a permit to operate within the PWSA will not be issued and the
undertaking is not permitted to proceed in this location. The proponent
is advised to consider an alternate site to develop this undertaking.
